French Cuisine: Champ de Ble in ZJG

I think it has been a while since i posted some food photos. The reason behind this was because of WORK la. What else? Taking hold of my life and my time. Haih! Anyway, back to the food story. Zhangjiagang is a small little place that has like what, 800000 population of Chinese. This of course, does not add to the addition of swarm of foreign expats that lands and work here in this land of boringness and dullness.

Hence, the need for us to indulge and excite ourself once a while in Shanghai, which is 2 hours away, or Wuxi / Suzhou which is 1-2 hours away. Food and shopping it is, when comes to going to this places during the weekend.

ZJG itself have some of these fancy restaurant as well. Not much, 1 or 2 perhaps, but due to the lack of choices. Normally our taste buds are limited to these range of food selections. French cafes, italian pasta, japanese sashimis, korean bbq, cantonese Guangzhou and some fast food chain such as McD's, KFC and Pizza Hut are our only choices.

This particular posts, i will be talking about one of the fancy restaurant that we goes in ZJG. This is a french fine dining restaurant, Cafe Champ de Ble. Not much of a history though. From what we heard, the cook is the owner of the restaurant, and the wife runs the services and out-of-the-kitchen work. Not too sure though.

Anyway, we are there for food. Been there a couple of times and snap a couple of pictures of the food. As usual, foie gras was complimentary that comes with a basket of garlic bread. Average expenses there for 1 is around RMB100 with a beer, perhaps? I mean, if you wanted really to go french style, then you would have to order a proper red wine, ain't it? Not some sort of table wine. Costs you maybe at around RMB400-RMB1000 for a decent wine that goes with your food? Ask for proper recommendation though!

Tried some beef steak there that marinated with red wine, tried their fillet tenderloin steak medium cook, tried their duck breast salad, tried their beef salami pizza as well, tried their carbonara pasta as well and other dishes. Taste rather good as well with quality food, quality meat and quality cooking. *I'm already hungry now, looking back at the pictures and imagining the taste that goes with it!* Yum Yum!

Overall, we are truly satisfied with the service and the food quality. Quality decor with a hint of fine classic dine and with the prices that are on the upper side of a typical normal expat cuisine, i give this a thumbs up. Perhaps i will try to snap more better quality picture of the restaurant and the food. Looks pretty dull here. Hahahaha.

Until the next food posts, i says bon appetite!

by krc, "If you're in Zhangjiagang and have time for a leisurely lunch or dinner, then Champ de Ble is a must visit. Champ de Ble has a casual cafe atmosphere (overlooking a lovely park and pagoda) with an open kitchen and diverse, creative menu featuring French, Italian and Japanese cuisine.

Champ de Ble is my pick for "Best Restaurant in Zhangjiagang." It's cuisine, in my opinion, tops the much pricier European restaurants in Shanghai.

The food and presentation are excellent. Portions are typical for a fine-dining restaurant. Champ de Ble is one of those rare finds in China where you can choose from several excellent salads. The seafood is fresh and the steak rivals anything you'll find in Omaha. The restaurant usually has a limited but adequate selection of Austrailian, French and California wines, as well as others. Cocktails and beer are available in the restaurant and in the adjacent bar (a pagoda), which is under common ownership but separate management. Your order might take a little while, but the atmosphere, staff and music (int'l) are pleasant and the food is well worth the wait. If you're dining alone, allow an hour for dinner. If you're dining with a group, allow an hour and a half or more. Patrons are never rushed, so take all the time you like. Champ de Ble is very popular with the city's European, Japanese, Korean and American expats as well as locals.

Reservations usually are not necessary, but if you're dining with a group of 5 or more, it's best to call ahead. The restaurant is closed for lunch on Mondays and closed all day on the first and third Sunday of each month. Dress is casual and all major credit cards are accepted.

It is difficult to settle on a single favorite dish from Champ de Ble's menu...a top 5 is a little easier. I strongly recommend the Roma Salad (about $4.75), the Chicken & Parmesan Salad ($6), the Black Pepper Steak ($9), the Pork Cutlet in red wine sauce ($9), and the Gazpacho. The pizza (avg. $6) is excellent.

If you're a salad lover, a double order of the Roma Salad or the Chicken & Parmesan Salad is enough to satisfy most appetites. A salad followed by an entree is very filling.

Dinner for under $10 per person (without wine) is easily managed. Dinner for four with wine, salad and entree typically runs about $16 or so per person. Dinner with a lot of wine runs a bit more. "

Theme: Eclectic/International
Price: less than US$10
Comparison: more expensive than average
Address: Corner of JiYang Lu & GongYuan Lu.
Phone: 0512-58131977
Directions: Just look for the pagoda at the corner of Ji Yang Lu and Gong Yuan Lu (actually on GongYuan Lu) and follow the path into the restaurant.

It's not too expensive and the food looks top quality. I wouldn't mind having some Pizza (picture 4) and Carbonara Pasta (picture5) + Garlic Bread. Yummy :)
